Bill Bernett has been intimately involved in the Internet since it's beginning. He brings over 30 years experience in all aspects of computing and data communications. This extensive experience includes: UNIX systems and network administration; UNIX System Internals (Sun, Motorola, HP, SGI) and setup of HTTP, WAIS, PLS, DNS, BOOTP and mail servers; real-time extensions, UNIX device drivers (SCC, SCSI, etc.) using C, assembler languages, Perl, FORTRAN, Pascal, COBOL and Basic; and HW/SW integration and diagnostics.
Bill moved to Melbourne, Florida from Haworth, New Jersey in 1967 to attend Florida Institute of Technology, majoring in Computer Sciences. While attending FIT he was offered and accepted a position at the FIT Administrative Computing Center. Duties included: Systems administration and applications (ISARS) support for the student records database. In 1972, he held a position with Xerox/Honeywell supporting customers such as: Air Force Eastern Test Range, Range Measurements Lab; Naval Training Center, Flight Simulator Lab; Honeywell Aerospace, Simulations Lab; Marshall Space Flight Center, Simulation Lab; Miami Heart Institute, Administrative Computer Center; Stanford College; and Nova University.
In 1974, Bill provided technical assistance to ENSCO, Inc., under contract to the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the Department of Defense (the predecessor to the Internet) in their development of software to enable the Range Measurements Lab's Xerox Sigma7 computer to function as a host on the ARPA Network.
From 1979 to 1995 Bill worked for Emerge Systems, a computer systems company specializing in embedded realtime operating systems. During this period he advanced from Sr. Systems Analyst to Vice-President and designed and developed the RTUX(tm) embedded multitasking realtime operating system including ethernet, arcnet, and TCP, UDP, IP, ARP, RARP, FTP, TELNET, RIP, etc. protocol drivers and was the UNIX Systems Administrator.
Recent endeavors include providing technical consulting to America Online, Rockwell International, ScientificAtlanta, United Space Alliance, Boeing and Spinning Cat Data Systems. He also worked on projects for numerous customers, including: COMSAT General (60 MBPS TDMA Satellite Telephone Switch); Harris Control Systems (ARAMCO Power Utilities control system); Insystec (C compiler optimizations for desktop computer system development); Brookhaven National Labs; MTS Systems Inc.; Day-Sheridan Systems; General Electric Satellite Systems; ETC; Scientific Atlanta VSTAT Systems; and America Online Inc.
